Infrared TV Listening Systems

Many people who experience a hearing loss find that enjoying their favorite TV program has become increasingly difficult. In particular, raising the volume on your TV may cause discomfort for others in the room as well as your neighbors.
Infrared TV listening systems help solve this problem by allowing you to adjust the volume for yourself without imposing on others.
We've reviewed both Williams Sound and Sennheiser products to help you determine which one is right for you. Here are some of the criteria we've considered:
- ease of use
- battery operation and recharging
- hearing aid compatibility
- audio quality
- and price

We are planning to open an auction house and need help choosing the audio equipment that would best suit our needs and budget. Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.
Hi Becky,
You can always consider a permanent installation with horn speakers connected by long home run cables to a fixed power amp, but we have had a lot of success recommending the Fender Passport PD 250 including stands (now on special) along with the Fender Executive wireless microphone kit.
The 250 Watt amplifier covers crowds up to 500 people and the mic kit includes both a collar and lapel type microphone. The Passport PA system gives you a lot of flexibility because it can be set up and/or packed up in minutes.
Hope this helps!

Could you please tell me if you have a cassette duplicator for the mini cassettes?
Hello Patti,
I've done extensive research on this question as it has come up several times in the past few years. I have not found a device which does this as of yet, although you would think it's a natural for the big manufacturing companies to invent one. There just doesn't seem to be a financial incentive - or, more likely, the focus has shifted to digital voice recording. There are MP3, .Wav and hard drive recorders that accomplish the same tasks which mini recorders have traditionally been used for.
The only way I know of accomplishing what you ask is to play back the tape, through the Line Out jack on the mini cassette recorder (if there is one) directly into a standard cassette tape recorder - in real time.
From there you use that master to produce your copies on standard cassette tape duplicators.
Hope this helps !
Mary B . sent in this request for advice:
We do tours all over the world. China, Russia and other countries. We go into museums in these countries and they have high security. I am looking for a tour guide system that is world compliant. A system that won't interfere with security and other systems that are there. Please let me know if you have something like this. Thanks!
Hi Mary,
There are two major types of assistive listening equipment used for museums: FM and Infrared.
Infrared offers outstanding security because the signal does not pass through the walls of the room you are standing in, and will not interfere with most other broadcasting devices. Unfortunately, these advantages limit the usefulness of infrared equipment for portable applications. You must stand in one place. That's why, so far, all Tour Guide Systems use the FM band.
That said, every nation imposes restrictions regarding FM usage. For instance, Russia uses the 72-76mHz frequency band for emergency services. And in China, that band is used for remote control toys.
The best suggestion I can give you is to purchase an FM tour guide system tuned to the 216 mHz band, which interferes the least with most broadcasting entities throughout the world.
At the very least, it will prevent you from unwittingly driving some unsuspecting child's racecar into the Great Wall of China while conducting your next tour.
Thanks for your inquiry!
Keep those calls, emails, cards and letters coming. Maybe we'll feature your question in an upcoming issue!
