Hi Bill,
Take a look at this entry in the AudioLink A/V Glossary which is succinct and to the point:
"Balanced: Referring to wiring: Audio signals require two wires. In an unbalanced line the shield is one of those wires. In a balanced line, there are two wires plus the shield. For the system to be balanced, it requires balanced electronics and usually employs XLR connectors. Balanced lines are less apt to pick up external noise. This is usually not a factor in home audio, but is a factor in professional audio requiring hundreds or even thousands of feet of cabling."
Now that I've cleared that up, take a look at at an XLR microphone cable that will not "unbalance" your checkbook.

First of all, thanks for your rental business! Second, yes, this equipment is well suited, and indeed originally intended for use as a tour guide system. As long as your group stays within 100 feet of the tour guide they should be able to hear every word!
