Do you have pro-audio questions? AudioMan's got answers!
Terry B. asks:
What's the difference between a podium and a lectern?
Hi Terry,
The difference between the two is function. Traditionally a lectern
is the surface where you place your notes. It is this function from which the name derives. Sophisticated lecterns are tilted for easy reading and often have an attached microphone and/or reading lamp. Modern lecterns can also double as portable PA systems. They're conveniently lightweight, transportable and can be set on top of a table or desk at a moment's notice.
The podium is either an accessory item which can be attached to a lectern, or the base stand permanently affixed to it. Its name comes from the fact that it rests on the ground (pod as in foot) not on a table. One further distinction of a modern podium is its ability to be custom fitted with additional loudspeakers and to be turned into a large area PA system.
The lectern, while more flexible, is often less prestigious for formal presentations. Two options: you choose.
Now I'll get off my soap box.
Thanks for writing!
Wendy M. wants to know:
How does a wireless microphone work?
Hello Wendy,
A conventional wired microphone converts sound waves into an electrical audio signal that travels to the PA system through a cable. A wireless microphone system goes one step further, and converts the audio signal created by the microphone to a radio signal (UHF/VHF) or an Infrared signal. Then the transmitter broadcasts that signal through an antenna.
The job of the receiver is to pick up the signal broadcast by the transmitter and change it back into an audio signal. The output of the receiver is electrically identical to a standard microphone signal, and can be connected to a typical microphone input in a PA system or a closed system headset.
For more information on this subject, read our article on Wireless Microphone Systems.
Hope this helps!
Don H. sent in this request for advice:
I still use a lot of cassette tape in my law firm, but I keep hearing I should switch to CD. What do you think?
Hi Don,
The humble cassette isn't dead -- yet.
CD sales, which in 1992 outsold cassettes for the first time, are still growing at a "record" pace. However, 14 years later, cassettes maintain a stronghold in certain corners of the market, most notably with religious organizations, schools and the legal profession.
This is for a variety of reasons including installed capacity of tape systems and players in places such as courtrooms and home entertainment units. Not to mention the fact that many people have extensive tape libraries that are time consuming to move to digital media. And, there are still millions upon millions of Sony Walkmans out there.
So long as it is legal many people will continue to "stick with tape!"
Thanks for your inquiry!
Keep those calls, cards and letters coming. Maybe we'll feature your question in an upcoming issue!
