Studio Man's Advice for Studio Engineers
This month we are proud to welcome a new guest columnist, Studio Man, who will be sharing his solution to an unusual problem. (Oh, and by the way, for all you DJ-Man fans, he was last seen ripping new sounds for a Euro tour and we all hope he is back with us in the fall.) Meanwhile, let's welcome Studio Man and his perfect pitch.
Take it away Studio Man!
Thanks AudioMan!
Occasionally customers ask for an equipment demo and I try to comply. So, here's the story (no joke). A few months ago, a Minister from a nearby church wanted to see if we could design a low cost system to record the choir. Now this was not just any church choir, but a world renowned a cappella group with a number of talented singers. He wanted to do justice to their voices by making a high level cassette recording, but, being the leader of a church, he was sensitive to cost and had only a limited budget. So I set about figuring out a way to do the job for less than 500 dollars.
I looked over some items on the shelf and decided to put them to the old bench test. I was intrigued by the Nady MXE-812 mixing console and now I pulled one out of the box and got started. Next I hooked up three CBM-40 boundary microphones, also a Nady product. To cap it off I ran it all to the Denon DRW-585, a nifty little dual cassette deck that would come in handy later for high speed dubbing.
I explained to the Minister that for the best results he should use three of the boundary mics and configure for left, right and center of the choir. The Nady CBM-40 boundary mic is one of the best in class and the price is unbeatable. It has a very sensitive diaphragm which makes it highly suitable for round table conferences, theaters and of course, choirs. It also comes with a proprietary 25 foot, 3 pin cable. This means you can place it a good distance away from the mixer. Perfect for both a PA system and for recording.
On the MXE-812 I panned the mics in the direction they were placed, so the left mic was panned left, the right mic panned right and of course, the center mic panned center. This gives a very dynamic, "3D" effect which adds great depth to the recording and is especially pleasing to the ear on stereo playback. By the way, panned is a studio term of art. It comes from panning, like in the movies, when you move across a spatial dimension to pick up a broad range of visual or audio inputs.
The Nady MXE-812 is a very impressive mixer not only for price (Audioman's note: by the way - it's on sale), but also because it is brimming with high-end features. My favorite feature? Phantom power! The Nady MXE-812, with 12V DC phantom power can really come in handy for condenser mics, and is actually required for the CBM-40. By the way, truth in advertising requires me to say that these are some of the best of all Nady products.
I used the RCA outputs on the Nady MXE-812 mixer (another nice feature) to make a real time recording on the Denon unit. The results: as quiet and clean as you can get with analog. The retail value of this setup came to only $429.00, so that left about $70 to play with.
To complete the package my personal choice was something often overlooked: a good pair of stereo headphones. The Samson CH700 stereo headphones are about right and fit the budget. These comfortable and low priced phones capture a wide range of frequencies and are specifically designed for monitoring and mixing.
So with the bench test complete I packed the components and sent them on to the church. Just last week, I heard the resulting recordings, and ta dum -- the choir sounds heavenly!
By the way there is a digital version of this set-up which, though a few dollars more, offers a recording of even higher quality and the option for digital manipulation in the post-recording and duplication process. For this digital set-up, just replace the Denon DRW-585 with the Tascam CD-RW750 CD rewritable recorder. The Tascam CD-RW750 allows you to make your own CDs from a variety of sources - other CDs, analog cassette tapes, even vinyl records. It will record real time direct to CD. This cuts out one step for duplication. Very handy when you have a deadline. (Not that deadlines matter, right AudioMan?) The entire set up (based on AudioLinks low, low prices) comes in under $900.
Now if they can only come up with telepathic recording for under a $1000. Still a few years off. Though I have asked the Minister to pray harder.
Back to you AudioMan!
Thanks Studio Man. Now, can you read my mind?
I'm thinking of a Studio Man Special and I think I will call it - wait it's coming to me - the Recording Package. now.

Introducing Pignose Amplifiers
AudioLink Services is proud to announce the addition of Pignose Amplifiers to our line of Musical Instruments & Gear.
Pignose Industries, started by guitarist Terry Kath and associates of the band Chicago in 1972, introduced their product to the music industry at the 1973 Summer NAMM show as the "Legendary" Pignose Amplifier. Since then, just about every guitarist has a Pignose story. It was not uncommon in the '70s to walk into a recording studio and hear a huge "wall of sound" emanating from the back, only to be surprised by the sight of a little Pignose on a stool.
Hooked up with an expensive Neumann or Sennheiser microphone the Pignose gets the job done. The Pignose output jack lets you use it as a preamp for incredible distortion with larger amplifiers, or for live or studio performances. It's not just a guitar amp, harmonica players love it too, for it's instant dirty-blues sound. These days, even electronic keyboard players (like Studio Man) have come to appreciate its pristine tonality.
Pignose inspired a number of subsequent imitators and improved variations, like Dwarf and Mouse, and they set the stage for modern toys like the Rock Man, Pocket Rockets,
and the Zoom line of portable amplifiers.
Remember, Pignose appeared well before the Walkman, when car stereos played 8-track cassettes and people still used slide rules. This portable amp with the funny name was truly "built to last". It's a nostalgic product that still makes you want to plug in and Go, Go, Go...

Do you have pro-audio questions? AudioMan's got answers!
Steve S. asks:
My daughter is getting married at an outdoor ceremony in August and I need some advice on how to "wire" the minister and the couple for the audience to hear them. Can you help?
Hi Steve,
I recommend the Nady 401X Quad Lavaliere Microphone System. This system has four independent VHF receivers in one convenient, rugged, all-metal single rack space housing — which makes operating four wireless systems at the same time easier than ever. You can control volume and tone individually or together. The lapel microphone with bodypack transmitter are small enough to be hidden in the folds of clothing. The receiver unit would then be connected to the existing PA system via XLR or 1/4 inch cable, both of which are included.
Give us a call at 1-800-516-6955 and let one of our sales staff fill you in on the details. And we at AudioLink Services extend our congratulations on the blessed event!
Hope this helps!

My father is a gadget guy and he's always looking for new toys. I don't know the first thing about about audio so I can't tell if you have something he would like. I have seen other sites that offer gift certificates. Do you have them too?
Hi Holly,
That's a great question! I have brought it up to the developers here and we are looking into ways to do it properly. If we get it off the ground, I will award you the first one free of charge as a reward for your great suggestion. Check back with us soon!
[management comment: Keep those suggestions coming. This is a can do idea - congrats to Holly J. on her upcoming certificate!]
Thanks!
Robert R. had this inquiry:
I am an interpreter in New Orleans and recently I saw some Williams Sound FM portable equipment being used at a church I was visiting. It worked great and I am very interested in buying the system. I see that you offer it as a rental. I would like to make sure it is what I need before I buy. Can you give me more details? Thanks.
Hi Robert,
The Williams Sound products you refer to are also known as Tour Guide equipment because it's very useful for hearing assistance as well as interpreting, or translation. We do rent it and it's a good idea to see if you are comfortable with its operation and whether it will do the job before purchase. Just call our sales staff at 1-800-516-6955 and they will set you up for the rental.
Hope this helps!
Keep those calls, cards and letters coming. Maybe we'll feature your question in an upcoming issue!
