Studio Man Mixing!Studio Man's sound solution for rehearsing at home with musical instruments

This month we welcome back our very own Studio Man, who is very excited about his latest invention - a solution for the noisy problem of rehearsing at home with musical instruments (including drums)!

Take it away Studio Man...

Hey AudioMan. Thanks for having me back.

You know that personal recording studios have become a huge cottage industry and we are seeing more and more clients come to us for advice on how to set one up (always happy to help by the way). So, there are a lot of groups out there who do their rehearsing and recording in the basement, or the living room, or even the kitchen (real convenient for those mandatory breaks and snacks). And, though it is not a new problem, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there is a real need to find a compromise between the jam of the musician and the sleep of the neighbors.

Not to mention that you probably want to avoid the police pounding on your door and interrupting your greatest inspiration ...

Well, the other day I was working on a rental of our top-of-the-line digitally controlled wireless FM band receivers (get it band?) when it all of a sudden hit me: "Why not use the FM Band wireless receivers to solve the problem of at home rehearsals?"

After all, wireless FM technology is used everyday in churches, schools, theaters and all kinds of meetings...anywhere sound reinforcement or language translation is needed. Why not adapt this well established technology to the home studio?

So I hooked up the Listen Technologies Basic FM system with four receivers and earplugs to a Nady MXE-812 mixer and had some friends come over with their instruments to give it a whirl, the next best thing to a bench test. The results were fantastic!

We plugged in a Fender P-51 wired microphone for the vocals plus a Washburn Traveler Bass and a Washburn Electric/Acoustic for the guitarists. Topping it off we connected the PinTech E-Jam electronic drum kit. After a little adjusting with the mixer levels, we were able to hear ourselves perfectly without making a noise any louder than a low volume radio or TV.

So here is the end result - a mixer plus digital receivers and transmitters will give you true studio acoustics with almost no noise output to disturb your neighbors, spouse, sleeping children or the police.

Now you can have a fully equipped home studio for solos, vocals, or even full band sounds and the neighbors will still believe you're just another average Joe (or Jane) who just happens to dress kind of funny.

Back to you AudioMan!

Thanks a lot Studio Man. Another great idea! Way to think outside the (FM band) box. Now, I'm thinking of another Studio Man Special in honor of your brainstorm and I think I will call it - wait it's coming to me - the Play PalSM FM Band Rehearsal Package - Another AudioLink Sound Solution for home studios. Hey I wanted to call it the Musician's Friend but you can't win them all!

Oh, and one last word of advice to all you kids out there...please try this at home.

carl Martin Guitar Effects Pedals! Introducing Carl Martin Guitar Effects Pedals

AudioLink Services is proud to announce the addition of Carl Martin Guitar FX Pedals to our line of Musical Instruments & Gear.

ESR/Carl Martin was founded in 1990 as a professional PA sound rental company. Shortly after, they began producing custom made audio equipment. The goal from the very beginning was to develop and produce products for the demanding professional musician, with a superior sound quality and features not seen on any other guitar effect pedal. As a result of that their first pedal, The Hot Drive'n Boost, was introduced in 1993.

Due to their extensive knowledge of the professional music industry, and contacts with a wide range of demanding musicians, Carl Martin has been able to maintain high quality and they now have a wide range of guitar effect pedals and controllers, with more to come in the future.

Read what some expert musicians and reviewers have written about Carl Martin pedals:

VINTAGE GUITAR Magazine: DeLayla XL

Starting with a delay echo, it had that punchy, slightly distorted attack for which old Echoplex machines are known. Its decay sounded identical, with tape deterioration tone you simply cannot get from a digital unit – pure warm and nasty. This pedal acts just like the real thing, but without the hassle of tapes and unreliable electronics. We could easily tap out our tempo with our foot with the tempo switch. You'll not find a more accurate-sounding tape delay unit than the DeLayla, which is one of the most accurate representations we've heard.

GUITAR WORLD Magazine: Combinator 2

The Construction is rugged, the layout clean and, most importantly, the sound is absolutely pristine. For the dedicated stomp box user, the Combinator 2 is a revelation.

Carl Marin Hot Drive'n Boost MK3GUITAR PLAYER Magazine: Hot Drive'n Boost MK3

In Drive mode, I was stoked with the range afforded by the Gain knob, which provided everything from subtle splashes of dirt to complete molten meltdown. The sound remained smooth and musical no matter how much distortion was piled on, and dynamically sensitive to my picking attack and guitar’s volume.

Bassist Magazine: Carl Martin pedals in general.

High performance, low-noise pedals which can be used live or in the studio are rare beasts, but that's the case here. Pedals which work at this level of efficiency and are this well made, with this level of pedigree aren't cheap, but in the same breath aren't expensive either. If you appreciate paying for quality, the Carl Martins wont be found wanting.

Questions and AnswersDo you have pro-audio questions? AudioMan's got answers!

Billie M. asks:

In 2003 I purchased a Nady Quad lavaliere mic system from your company and I've been very happy with the sound and dependability. I would like to purchase another set but I'm concerned about frequency interference. I understand there are more frequencies to choose from. Can you help?

Hi Billie,

I sure can! There are 2 groups of frequencies available for the quad system. Which means you can use a total of eight mics at one time. Without getting too technical, the basic designations are always shown on your receiver. So if you have A, B, D & N (the factory default) you would need to specify your next set as E4, F, H & E.

Alternatively, just tell us what you currently have as settings and we will do the rest.

Hope this helps!

Frances M. writes:

Please help! I have been put in charge of upgrading our school auditorium sound system and I've been advised to purchase a "pre-amplifier". Do you have one and can you explain what it does? Thanks.

Hi Frances,

Let's see if this clears the air. A pre-amplifier (or pre-amp) is a device that takes a single source signal, such as a turntable, tape-deck or CD player, and passes that signal on to a power-amplifier. A pre-amp allows you to adjust that single source before it is mixed in with other sounds.

To accomplish this, the pre-amp usually has a number of controls, including source selector switches, balance knobs, volume sliders and tone-controls which aid in fine tuning your signal.

Your pre-amplifier is just a link in the amplification chain which affords you greater control over your program source, tone and volume.

Hope this helps!

[Editor's note: For explanations of this and other mystifying phrases, consult our Glossary of Audio Terms.]

Nicole P. had this inquiry:

I recently bought your Califone 2455AV cassette/CD boom box with carrying case and now I need the companion speakers. Can you quote me a price? Also, I just wanted to say that I've searched many sites and found that you have the best prices to offer. I'm opening my own dance studio so thanks for the great deals!

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for your business and kind comments! We try to be the low priced source for all your School & Classroom needs and it's great to get some feedback on our efforts. The speakers you refer to are the Califone SP-2400 companion speakers (also known as the Buddy Blasters).

They're an affordable ($79.99 - that's 27% off retail) transportable speaker system ideal for use in settings that require additional sound projection. Although designed for use with Califone boom boxes, these speakers can also be used with any audio system rated up to 50-Watts RMS. Made of high-impact ABS plastic, the unique handle latches both speakers together for complete portability. They should be the perfect complement for your system and will work great in your new dance studio. Good Luck!

Hope this helps!
